Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas to develop hydrogen fuel cell forklifts.

Hyundai Construction Equipment will be developing hydrogen fuel cell forklifts under a partnership agreement with Hyundai Motors and Hyundai Mobis. The lifts are expected to be introduced in 2023.

The companies will work on the technology together at the Hyundai Mabuk Research Center in Yongrin-si, Gyeonggi-do in South Korea.

The three companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create the partnership. According to the Memorandum, Hyundai Motors and Hyundai Mobis will design and manufacture the hydrogen fuel cell systems that will include power packs. Hyundai Construction Equipment will design, manufacture and evaluate the performance of the hydrogen fuel cell forklifts and excavators.

Hydrogen fuel cells are designed ti generate electricity through the chemical reactions between hydrogen and oxygen as its power source. Thus, there are no toxic emissions polluting the air. It is said that hydrogen fuel cells are especially compatible with the power demands involved with large construction equipment. That’s because it is easier to expand the capacity of hydrogen fuel cells.

Once introduced, the new forklift will provide an alternative power source for warehouses, distribution centers, and ports.
