Forklift Tire Guide

Just as forklifts come in different shapes and sizes, so too do forklift tires. There are three different types of forklift tires, and sure enough, they each correspond with different types of lift trucks and perform very differently. This post explains each of the forklift varieties, giving you a clear understanding of which is appropriate for your lift truck and the advantages and disadvantages of each type.

Pneumatic

The pneumatic tire is known for its durability and long-lasting construction. It is well-equipped for both indoor and outdoor use. Some  are filled with liquid polyurethane foam, and they are excellent for heavy-duty, rough condition. Any forklift operator who spends significant time outdoors is well advised to invest in the pneumatic variety, as they provide superior traction and height. They are also the most comfortable, by virtue of the fact that they do not have any shock absorbers. Additionally, the superb performance of pneumatic tires also goes a long way toward extending the life of your forklift. Unfortunately, the performance benefits of the pneumatic variety also result in them being the most expensive.

Solid rubber

Solid rubber tires are the most durable tire variety, and they are recognized for their energy efficiency. They do not have the cushion offered by the pneumatic model, but are solid as a result of being constructed around a metal band. Solid rubber tires are notably less expensive than pneumatic ones, yet this is a natural consequence of them offering less protection. Even though they are not the most durable variety available, the solid rubber variety is still usable for large forklifts.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane tires are the least durable, and they should not be used for large forklifts that are used for heavy outdoor tasks. Not only is the polyurethane variety the least rugged, but they are also the lightest. Even so, they provide good traction and are commonly used for electric, indoor forklifts. Because the polyurethane material can withstand a good deal of weight, they are easily able to handle the added weight of electric forklift batteries. Another real advantage of the polyurethane category is that it is the most inexpensive of the varieties.

As you can see, each type of forklift tire carries its own distinct set of pros and cons. Because they are so different, deciding on which is right for your forklift should be a relatively easy task. When shopping for them, be mindful of the characteristics of each tire variety in mind so that you know exactly what to expect when it comes time to use your tires.
